
I still had significant weight to lose, but still no cigar. I lost weight easily the first 6 months and then.BAM. I have been dieting for 2 years and have personally been affected by the downward spiral discussed in the book. Fung's book was an interesting read for the simple sake of introducing something to the table that hasn't been popular and has been demonized in the west for a while (fasting and high insulin's direct correlation to obesity and weight gain.) You will find it in the bargain stacks of your local Barnes and Noble before long however, and most of the people who read it will still be obese. So no, I don't think you will be seeing a Nobel Prize nod for this "breakthrough" and a cover story from the NEJM. He won't do this because he knows full well it will be shot down like the Iraqi navy, so he sticks to a less sophisticated audience. I would challenge the good doctor to submit his work for peer review from the medical community and see how well received it is. Conflating the issue with lots of random bullshit in an attempt to make money off of people who are obese and desperate is especially revolting to me. Fasting works for the same reason any diet does, by producing a calorie deficit.

Though the only major caveat from this particular dip stick is it's not really a fad diet, simply a technique (IF). It is essentially (yet another) profiteering attempt by an MD incorporating a fad diet that draws conclusions that have either limited or zero backing in the scientific literature.
